Bill Ingram

"Navy Bill" Ingram was one of a long line of Ingrams to perform at the U.S. Naval Academy at the turn of the 20th century. However, Ingram was to become someone special - not just another face in the crowd. He would later return to Annapolis as the coach of the Middies and lift Navy to immediate success. Ingram began his coaching career at William & Mary where, in 1922, he charted a 6-3-0 record before moving on to Indiana the next year. At the Hoosier helm for three seasons, Ingram's teams finished with a combined 10-12-1. Then, in 1926, Ingram returned to his alma mater and promptly led the Midshipmen to a 9-0-1 record. The only smudge on an otherwise perfect record was a 21-21 tie with arch rival Army. He remained at Navy for the next four years and compiled an overall record of 32-13-4 while there. The University of California suddenly took interest in Ingram's coaching talents, and Ingram was westward bound. His 1931 Golden Bears finished 8-2-0 and his 1934 team - his last as a coach - went 6-6. All told, Ingram coached a total of 13 seasons at four schools, and logged a career record of 75- 42-9.
